![]() B. h. hutchinsii ("Richardson's" Cackling Goose), (two smaller birds) with larger B. c. interior ("Todd's" Canada Goose). The darker of the hutchinsii (right) is atypical, with the vast majority of birds having plumage tones as shown by the lighter individual (left), although bill and head relationships (primary indicators) still assure correct identification. Note the quite rounded crown and sloping forehead and long, sloping culmen of the B. c. interior, coupled with a clean break between the black stocking and very whitish upper breast. ![]() B. c. canadensis ("Atlantic" Canada Goose) with smaller B. h. hutchinsii ("Richardson's" Canada Goose). Both these birds are typical for their races. Note the difference in upperpart color, with the expected lighter tones of hutchinsii and the browner, darker tones of canadensis. Also, the steep forehead angle on canadensis is a good primary indicator. Photo © 2005 Angus Wilson January 2005, Lido Beach, New York |
