After doing further research I'm not comfortable that Common Loon can be eliminated. |

The description and photographs are convincing. |

After further study of the report and photographs, I agree with Lisa that the bill looks more like the Common Loon. |

The description is good for YBLO, but the photos, while not very good quality, show features more compatible with Common Loon, such as the bill profile and angle at which it is held. I think that the dark surrounding the eye is more typical of COLO, also. |

Photographs, though blurry and distant, do seem to support the ID as Yellow-billed Loon. |

Dave makes a good point about the shape of the bill. The bill does appear really light, but the shape fits Common Loon much better. I'm changing my vote. |

The loon's bill in the first image, which is the only clear view we have of this feature, looks like it's wedge-shaped with a dark, curved culmen. To me, this is not very convincing for YBLO. |

Again, the first image shows a loon with a wedge-shaped bill, suggesting a Common Loon to me. I can make nothing of this feature in the other images because of their poor quality. |

The size, color and bill color, plus the pictures convince me on the ID. |
5-6-10
While the pictures are not the best, the second two do not look like a COLO. The description see,ed adequate. |

The 1st image gave me pause the 1st time around but now I'm almost convinced that image #1 (looks very much like a 1st-W Common) is of a different bird than images 2&3 - for which a case could be made for a Yellow-billed (esp. an adult in basic, which would be expected to be darker). In the first round I was swayed by the convincing description. Now I'm erring on the side of caution for round 2 (even though I'd bet that Terry saw a YBLO and that images 2&3 might be it). |
