No description, but a fairly adequate if fuzzy photo. The massive size of the bill and its shape, plus the slightly up-turned position convince me that it was this species. This bird was posted on IBLE and many people also saw it.

While I agree with Dave that the picture is dark, the bill is too massive for a COLO. As i recall, many people observed this bird, and while it is too bad that larry didn't discribe it better, I am confident that it was a Yellow-billed Loon.

Dave Trochlell -- Reject, specific identification not established

This loon image confounds the old adage that "a picture is worth a thousand words", because I sure couldn't identify it from this image, and (unfortunately) we don't have any description of it. Did anyone else have difficulty deciding whether it was a YBLO or a COLO? I did, but wondered if it appeared to be so dark because of an artifact of photography. If that's the case, it would've been extremely helpful to have had a good written description at hand to explain this problem.

Though a dark photo (& I agree that a more thorough description would be helpful), I think it shows bill shape & color well.

I believe other comments addressed Dave's concern, notably bill structure, face pattern, and pale back barring.
