HOW AND WHEN DID YOU POSITIVELY IDENTIFY THE BIRD, AND WHAT CLINCHED THE IDENTIFICATION FOR YOU?
ID'ed positively after looking at Mullarney's birds of Europe later that night. Shape of bill patch, bill, head, neck, body were all importnat
HOW DID YOU ELIMINATE SIMILAR SPECIES, AND WHAT WERE THEY?
Mute Swan
Tundra Swan
Trumpeter Swan were all present bird was different than all three.
Bewick's Swan- Intitially tried to put the bird in this category, it was too different from tundras to fit. So we did a bunch more research the shape of the saddle (specifically it going under the nostrils)
EXPERIENCE WITH THIS SPECIES (AND SIMILAR SPECIES):
Zero with Bewick's and Whooper fairly good with Trumpeter, Tundra, and Mute (which I feel is breeding in the state now...).
GENERAL BIRDING EXPERIENCE:
I have been birding since I was a young teen (mid 1970's). I organized and facilitated Idaho's first Master Birder class, compile two CBC's, run 4 BBS routes (2 in ID and 2 in WY), and do other bird censusing.
