DATE REPORT PREPARED: 1-15-12
DATE SIGHTING OCCURRED: 1-15-12

LOCALITY OF OBSERVATION: My back berd bird feeder
HABITAT: Urban yard
CONDITIONS: 10 minutes, partly cloudy, calm, 25F, 15 feet, good light.

DID YOU TAKE NOTES?: No, not at all
DID YOU CONSULT FIELD GUIDE OR OTHER REFERENCES?: Yes, later the same day
WHAT GUIDE(S) OR REFERENCE(S) DID YOU CONSULT?: Sibley Western Guide

DESCRIPTION: Columbidae. It was obviously a dove. Seen well while feeding on sunflower platform feeder. Light tan color, leading edge of wing white., dark lower ear patch, tail dark base, white tip
BEHAVIOR: Feeding steadily on black oil sunflower seeds. A dozen Eurasian collared Doves were feeding below the feeder, and whenever one came up to the platform the WWDO would supplant it.

HOW AND WHEN DID YOU POSITIVELY IDENTIFY THE BIRD, AND WHAT CLINCHED THE IDENTIFICATION FOR YOU? As soon as I noted the white leading edge of the wing, and no neck collar I knew what it was.
HOW DID YOU ELIMINATE SIMILAR SPECIES, AND WHAT WERE THEY? slightly smaller but about the same color as nearby collared doves, but without the dark neck collar.

EXPERIENCE WITH THIS SPECIES (AND SIMILAR SPECIES): First sighting in ID, but seen many times in AZ & Mexico
GENERAL BIRDING EXPERIENCE: About 65 years. Fairly good expertise.

WERE PHOTO(S), VIDEO, AND/OR AUDIO OBTAINED BY YOU?: Photo
