A good description that includes diagnoistic field marks. Carlisle eliminated other similar species

Lisa commented on the Bristle-thighed Curlew not being eliminated. In reading Jay's report again, I see that he did eliminate it. "whereas Bristle-thighed Curlew is very similar but has a buffy belly and tail"

Hardy -- Reject, specific identification not established

Although this is likely a Whimbrel record simply because of the rarity of Bristle-thighed Curlew (no records in Idaho), the description does not sufficiently distinguish this bird from a BTCU. I look forward to the comments by other committee members more familiar with these species.

Minimal description is adequate to confirm the identification of Whimbrel.

I agree that Whimbrel must be competed against Bristle-thighed Curlew but I feel the description is adequate to eliminate this possibility. Although the description does not include the underparts the report does mention that BT Curlew would have buffy tail and belly in the elimination of other species section and observer is experienced with Whimbrel. I saw two Whimbrels at Camas NWR with Jay, at which time we discussed the possibility of Bristle-thighed Curlew, and I am confident in his ability to separate these species.

Jay seems to have explained what separates this bird from other "curlews".

I still feel the description by Jay is adequate to separate this bird from all other similar species.
