The habitat seems a bit unusual for this species, but I have seen them in mudflats and pond edges in Louisiana. The description seems to rule out other species.

I believe the identification was correctly made, but the part of the description that reads: "A line of scattered white feathers along scapulars" was troubling. Upland Sandpiper doesn't have white scapulars, but perhaps this is a reference to pale feather edges that appeared white from a distance? I was also suprised that the bird's underparts - its white chest and belly - were not described, since these features would provide an obvious contrast to the relatively darker upperparts. Perhaps they were not in view from the observer's vantage point.

I'm convinced this is an Upland Sandpiper (despite a difference of opinion on what constitutes a "long bill"!).
