Russ Manwaring is reporting this sighting made by Dave Pratt a few days after I asked him to see if birds were present this year in High Valley. I interviewed him after sighting on June 23, 07

LOCALITY OF OBSERVATION:

Valley County in High Valley
along main road at 3rd right turn corner before straight away to Beal Corner

HABITAT:

Pastureland

CONDITIONS:

5 minutes - One on fence post other on ground below fence post. Viewed from roadway =~ 20 feet distance

No, not at all

Yes, another day after the observation

WHAT GUIDE(S) OR REFERENCE(S) DID YOU CONSULT?:

National Geographic-I reviewed the guide with Dave on 5/23 to remind him of bird details, size, habitat and head bill structure.

DESCRIPTION:

Dave had full view of the birds as they preened.

BEHAVIOR:

Dave had full view of the 2 birds for 5 minutes, bird on ground mostly preened. Bird on post mostly looked around, some preening.

HOW AND WHEN DID YOU POSITIVELY IDENTIFY THE BIRD, AND WHAT CLINCHED THE IDENTIFICATION FOR YOU?

Dave has viewed these birds before and is familar with them. Head size to neck and body ratio is a good field indicator as well as typical post standing behavior

HOW DID YOU ELIMINATE SIMILAR SPECIES, AND WHAT WERE THEY?

There really aren't any other sandpipers in High Valley except spotted and phalaropes that would be similar, but not similar behavior

EXPERIENCE WITH THIS SPECIES (AND SIMILAR SPECIES):

Dave has seen these birds in High Valley over a period of years and sightings have been confirmed by myself in the past.

GENERAL BIRDING EXPERIENCE:

Russ has birded with Dave Pratt and he has good cognitive ability. He knows the birds he is familar with and he knows this one for many years.
