The picture certainly looks good, but I was bothered by no mention of the white belly. The season seems all wrong too. |

I accept this record, simply because the excellent photo leaves little doubt of the bird's identity. That said, there are some troubling aspects to this record. First of all, one would imagine that a bird this obvious would've been seen again by the many birders out looking for it, given the limited habitat in the Boise area, the obvious size and colors of the bird, and very accessible pathways along the Boise River. Secondly, although the observer claims to possess "mid-level" birding skills, it's very surprising that he couldn't distinguish a Tricolored Heron from a Great Blue Heron. Finally, the description of the bird was disapointing, and appeared to be written from looking at the superb headshot image. Most egregiously, the observer failed to mention the glaringly white belly area that I'd think would be obvious in all ages of Tricolored Herons. |

Tough b/c the photo is of a Tricolored but it's hard to judge the background of photo (could the photographer have sorted photos incorrectly?). That said, I saw/spoke with the observer the next day at the spot and believe that's what he saw. |

Good photo shows bill and eye color of adult in basic plumage. |
