The bill on this adult gull seems a little long for a Thayer's to me, but I've also seen birds just like this on the Oregon Coast, and think the bill shape is w/in the range for the species. Everything else I can see on this gull (wingtip pattern, structure, head shape) seems convincing for a Thayer's. I'm convinced.

I'm going to stay with my original vote to accept this one.

Details in the description and photo sufficient to confirm the identification of Thayer's Gull. This is a rare adult record.

The photo and description include field marks sufficient to confirm the identification of Thayer's Gull including thin bill, dark eye, smudgy head streaking, and large size of A-Spots typical of THGU.

Description of size/structure combined with eye color is convincing for Thayer's.

The size and head shape both looks good, as well as the bill size.

I still can't think of a good reason to reject this observation.

Darren Clark--Reject, specific identification not established

Although the photographs are interesting, I'm not sure other species, including Herring Gull can be safely eliminated from these images.

I still feel the photographs, though helpful, aren't diagnostic. These in conjunction with Jay's comments though are sufficient for ID.

I am a little uncomfortable with this one as some of the description of both plumage and structure were fairly general in nature. In addition, as the observer pointed out, the wings were not seen extended or in flight which should reveal the diagnostic Thayer’s Gull (Larus thayeri) primary patterning. However, the combination of “dark eyes, rounded head shape, and bill smaller than Herring” is sufficient for me to pass this round. I would reconsider my vote should this record move to a second round of voting based on others comments.

While I remain a bit uncomfortable due to identity based on characters other than primary pattern (the relative “A-spot” size is a tough one due to ware), the structural discussion and dark iris remain sufficient for me to accept.

The pictures were not very helpful but the description and elmination of similar species was convincing.
