DESCRIPTION:
Limnodromus grissseus Thi juvenile bird was observed while standing next to a Stilt Sandpiper and was not looked at closely at the time. It was brought to my attention by Cliff Weisse that this individual was a Short-billed Dowitcher when he was looking at my photostream on flickr so after relooking at my photo I agreed that the bird next to the Stilt Sandpioer was indead a Short-billed Dowitcher. The bird shws uniform edges onall underparts indicated a juvenile . The Tettiarls have internal bars and notches and hte bill shows a slight droop near the tip.
BEHAVIOR:
I do not recall this bird vocalizing. I did not see this bird fly or preen. It was mixxed in with many peeps and stayed quite close the the Stilt Sandpioers which there were a total of 7 individuals.
HOW AND WHEN DID YOU POSITIVELY IDENTIFY THE BIRD, AND WHAT CLINCHED THE IDENTIFICATION FOR YOU?
I would not have ID'd this bird in the field since I was leading a field trip with 6 beginning birders and they were all to busy looking at the Stilt Sandpipers that non of us noticed that this dowitcher was different. There have been very few Long-billed Dowitchers move through this area this year so this bird was not looked at closely.
HOW DID YOU ELIMINATE SIMILAR SPECIES, AND WHAT WERE THEY?
After reviewing my photos and what Cliff had emailed to me I came to the same conclusion that this was a Shrot-billed Dowither juvenile from my photos.
EXPERIENCE WITH THIS SPECIES (AND SIMILAR SPECIES):
I have observed this species only twice in the past. I am mainly reproting this bird for record purposes that this bird did visit the panhandle area of Idaho. All other sightings of this species were summer and at Mann Lake.
GENERAL BIRDING EXPERIENCE:
I have been birding for over 10 years and lead field trips for Palouse audubon and Canyon Birders.
