Weisse – Reject, specific identification not established

The bird in the photos is a worn adult dowitcher.  I’m not confident that I can identify this bird to species based on these photos.

The description mentions that this dowitcher had tertials scalloped with rufous edges, but I believe that's true for juveniles of both species of dowitchers. The image quality of the bird identified as a SBDO wasn't good enough for me to see internal markings or bars on its tertials.

I'm going to reject this one again. I'm now convinced that the species of this molting adult dowitcher can't be determined from the images or description.

The bird looks like an adult Long-billed Dowitcher to me.

Chuck Trost--Accept

The general color and the tertial markings are enough to convince me.

I'm switching my vote, as I hadn't considered that it might be an adult.

This looks like an adult dowitcher sp. with a juv. LBDO. It would be rather late for an adult SBDO. Perhaps a dowitcher expert could id from the photo in absence of any vocalizations.

Sturts--Accept

The description of "Rufous breast and scalloped rufous edged tertials compared to relatively plain gray breast and gray plain tertial of LB Dowitcher" is diagnostic.

After reading the comments from other Committee members, I feel I was a little hasty in accepting this record.
With further study, I agree that this is a Long-billed adult Dowitcher.

The observer claims juvenile SBDO but the bird looks to me to be an adult dowitcher about halfway molted from breeding plumage (esp. b/c of very orange breast) into winter plumage (mix of old & new feathers). Thus, w/o a call note heard, I'd want to see a different report b/c I'm not confident about ID of this adult bird.
