Description: huge conical bill; black head with white partial upper eye ring; black wings w/white spots, primaries brown; back brown w/black; beautiful ruby red chest (triangle) w/white belly and undertail coverts; black tail

Behavior: feeding at black-oil sunflower seed feeder.

How and when did you positively identify the bird, and what clinched the identification for you? Immediately saw the red chest, black head and white belly

How did you eliminate similar species, and what were they? Black-headed grosbeak is burnt orange below…no comparison.

Experience with this species (and similar species): have bhgr at my feeder each summer; have seen rbgr a number of times in this area

General birding experience: 15 year obsession ;)
