OTHER OBSERVERS: Jan Severtson id'd it 1st, corroborated by Herb Severtson, husband, same information as above Sandy & Dennis Mader, next-door neighbors; spotted July 4th in their backyard

DATE REPORT PREPARED: July 25, 2007

DATE SIGHTING OCCURRED: July 7, 2007

LOCALITY OF OBSERVATION: outside town at our home, country area located on hill at about 2,300 ft elevation

HABITAT: tall pines (forested area), native shrubs, backyard, water, 7 birdfeeders, lawn,

CONDITIONS: about 1 or 2 minutes. 75 deg, 6:30 p.m. from back deck to feeders--12 yards. sunny, clear, no optics.

DID YOU TAKE NOTES?: Yes, later the same day

DID YOU CONSULT FIELD GUIDE OR OTHER REFERENCES?: Yes, during the observation

WHAT GUIDE(S) OR REFERENCE(S) DID YOU CONSULT?: Nat'l Geo. Field Guide to the Birds of N.A., 4th ed.

DESCRIPTION: Cardinals according to the reference. Saw the whole bird, sitting at feeder and in flight Saw bright white wing patches, rosy breast, white rump patch as we could look down on the bird from 2nd story deck. Observed feeding with large beak

BEHAVIOR: flew to feeder, ate 1 black-oil sunflower seed, flew to north to pines on vacant lot. House finch, pine siskin, red crossbills in backyard, too.

HOW AND WHEN DID YOU POSITIVELY IDENTIFY THE BIRD, AND WHAT CLINCHED THE IDENTIFICATION FOR YOU? ID'd immediately without reference books because of unusual coloring and grosbeak bill, checked books when bird flew away

HOW DID YOU ELIMINATE SIMILAR SPECIES, AND WHAT WERE THEY? Unusual coloring and pattern, bill, size of bird. The coloring distinguished it from the other grosbeaks

EXPERIENCE WITH THIS SPECIES (AND SIMILAR SPECIES): Have Evening and Black-headed Grosbeaks all thru the summer, at our feeders, and flying thru. Belong to Audubon nationally and locally

GENERAL BIRDING EXPERIENCE: Belong to our chapter, field trips, some bird data, keep backyard log birding since 1970, starting in CA. Average level
