Excellent description of an immature male. The description elimnated the similar female Black-headed Grosbeak.

A somewhat incomplete description, but diagnostic red underwing coverts noted.

Although not as straight-forward an identification as an adult male. The report has all the details to support the identification of this bird as a Rose-breasted Grosbeak, and eliminated Black-headed Grosbeak.

While immature male Rose-breasted Grosbeaks (Pheucticus ludovicianus) can be tough to discern from juvenile Black-headeds (P. melanocephalus), the observer did a good job describing the key features, particularly wing lining coloration, to substantiate identity as well as discuss the possibility of a hybrid.

Despite report being prepared a year later from memory the reddish (although described as pink by Sibley!) wing linings do seem to be a clincher for Rose-breasted Grosbeak.
