LOCALITY OF OBSERVATION:
At feeder in Island Park, Fremont County, at the north end of the Last Chance Section and very close to Us 20.

HABITAT: Patch of trees consisting of Lodgepole Pine and Aspen in and area of mixed coniferous forest with many open areas mixed in.  This is near the Henry's Fork of the Snake River but this is not typical riparian habitat.

CONDITIONS: Distance to bird was about 25 feet.  Binocs used were Nikon 10 x 25 Mountaineers.

WHAT GUIDE(S) OR REFERENCE(S) DID YOU CONSULT?:

DESCRIPTION:  Adult male Rose-breasted Grosbeak.  Black head, white underparts with large red spot on central breast.

BEHAVIOR:  Feeding at feeder.

HOW AND WHEN DID YOU POSITIVELY IDENTIFY THE BIRD, AND WHAT CLINCHED THE IDENTIFICATION FOR YOU?
I recognized this species immediately.

HOW DID YOU ELIMINATE SIMILAR SPECIES, AND WHAT WERE THEY?
Adult male Rose-breasted Grosbeaks are distinctive and would not be confused with any other species.  No attemp was made to rule out hybrid.

EXPERIENCE WITH THIS SPECIES (AND SIMILAR SPECIES): 
 I'd seen several male Rose-breasted Grosbeaks in NJ prior to this sighting.

GENERAL BIRDING EXPERIENCE: 
 Serious birder for several years (5?) at time of sighting.

None
