1st Round

2nd Round

16 July 2010
Weisse – Accept

The description is sufficient to support the identification of this distinctive species.

Cliff Weisse--Reject, specific identification not established

Although males of this species are distinctive and this individual was likely a Rose-breasted Grosbeak, I agree that the description does not eliminate a possible hybrid with Black-headed, which is known to occur.

Hardy--Accept

Report describes distinctive adult male.

The description, though brief, describes only Rose-breasted Grosbeak.

Though this is on the early end (up to 3-4 weeks earlier than other 2010 reports), Sue saw the bird from about 10' away and she sounded very certain.

I remain convinced

I agree that the description could have been more thorough, but the red chest and all black head eliminate a BHGR X RBGR for me.

Dave Trochlell--Reject, specific identification not established

The chances are this was a male RBGR, as claimed. But the description of the bird was very brief and the report didn't compete the bird's features against those of a RBGR X BHGR hybrid.

I'm going to change my vote in the second round to accept this record. I voted to reject the record in the first round because the report didn't consider the possibility of a hybrid grosbeak, but I've since learned that hybrid RBGR X BHGR males are not likely to have a rose-colored chest, as this bird did.
