Lisa did a great job of describing this Loon and I think it likely was the Red-throated. However, Lisa didn't feel that she had positivly identified it and I am rejecting it on that basis.

I'm staying with my first round vote for the same reasons. I think this is important to have this on the list as a possible Red-throated Loon.

After reading the comments and then going back to report, I must agree with those accepting the report on the first round. Lisa, in describing the field marks she noted, makes a strong case for this being a Red-throated Loon; even though she is not 100% sure herself.

Although the description sounds pretty good the observer states "I never felt I had positively identified the loon". If the observer isn't sure of the ID I don't feel the record is acceptable.

If the observer has doubts about the ID I'm not comfortable accepting the record.

Charles Swift -- Accept

This was a well written report, succint, and with sufficient detail to convince me of the identification.

The observer may not be fully confident due to lack of experience with the species but the description is quite convincing in illustrating a typical individual of the species and the timing is correct for its occurrence.

Dave Trochlell -- Accept

Although the reporter seems uncertain about the identification, her description adequately points us toward RTLO.

Dave Trochlell -- Accept

Although the observer may not have been certain about this identification, her report speaks for itself, in that it well describes this Red-throated Loon.

Despite her lack of familiarity with the species, this report details the sighting of a loon that could only be a Red-throated Loon.

Carlisle -- Accept

With some hesitation due to the indicated lack of confidence by the observer .... However, several key criteria were noted included posture, bill shape, white flanks, spotted back, & neck/facial coloration. My guess is an immature bird.

While I see the point about (lack of) confidence of the observer, my sense is that this is just being cautious with a new species (or new plumage). Thus, I stick with the 1st round vote of accept because the description separated this from other loon species which the observer is familiar with.

Same comments - seems like this is one we need to discuss if no one's going to budge (??).

Darren Clark -- Reject, specific identification not established

Although much of the written description supports the identification, the observer states clearly that "I never felt I had positively identified the loon". If the observer is not confident in the identification, then I feel compelled to reject the report.

I'm still not comfortable accepting a record in which the viewer expresses doubt about the identification.

I haven't read anything that would change my original vote.

good description of head colors and bill shape and angle, as well as general size.

It doesn't matter to me whether she was confident - she described this bird quite well and it sure shounds like a RTLO to me.

At the risk of a deadlock, she described the bird well enough for me.
