Burley,ID Cassia County
Overland Ave., entrance to Chandell Road

HABITAT:

Roadside, Pasture, houses

CONDITIONS:

observed off and on for over an houre,late mid afternoon.
Sunny with clouds, no wind, 58 F.closest observation was at eyelevel aprox.less than 20 yard. Zeiss 8 power binocl.Nikon D200with 80-400 zoom.

DESCRIPTION:

Slimmer and more upright perching than Red-tailed, Gliding into pasture was somewhat like an Acipiter - long tail, very red in color,heavy banding across tail,

BEHAVIOR:

did not make any calls, was hunting in adjacend pasture from powerpols along Overland Av. Landed not 20 yards away from me on a wooden fence post to eat a large green praying mantis facing me. In that position it rimained for about 5-7 minutes

HOW AND WHEN DID YOU POSITIVELY IDENTIFY THE BIRD, AND WHAT CLINCHED THE IDENTIFICATION FOR YOU?

observing the bird on the fence post i with my binoculars i had the Sibley book and was able to make accurate comparison with the book

HOW DID YOU ELIMINATE SIMILAR SPECIES, AND WHAT WERE THEY?

did not match any other raptor

EXPERIENCE WITH THIS SPECIES (AND SIMILAR SPECIES):

I have seen Red-shouldered Hawks in California frequently also know local raptors fairly well
