Conditions (e.g. weather, prior weather, light conditions, distance, optical aids, duration, etc.): 10X binoculars. Distance as close as 15 feet.
Description of bird(s) (size, color, all field marks you observed, field marks not seen, etc.): Olive brown upperparts, white underparts, breast heavily spotted with black, flanks boldly streaked with black, central crown stripe orange framed by dark lateral crown stripes, bold white eye ring. Song typical Ovenbird primary song, tea-CHER tea-CHER tea-CHER, ascending in volume with each phrase, accent on second syllable.
Behavior of this bird(s) (song or calls, other birds with this one, interactions, etc.): Foraging on the ground and flushing into trees when disturbed. No interactions with other birds observed. It sang several times after being disturbed.
List similar species and tell how you eliminated them: Thrushes are eliminated by orange/dark striped crown, as are all other warblers. Also no other warbler has combination of olive brown upperparts, white underparts, heavily black spotted breast and bold black streaks on flank
What is your experience with this or similar species?: I’ve seen and heard numerous Ovenbirds on trips to the eastern US.
