Locality: Camas NWR Habitat: Russian Olives west of headquarters.
Conditions: Sunny day with light wind. I observed the bird through Nikon 10 x 25 Mountaineer binoculars at ranges as close as 15 yards. Observation lasted for approximately 15 minutes.
Description of bird: Adult male Northern Parula. Upperparts blue, back greenish. Undertail coverts white, belly and flanks white, throat yellow, breast yellow, rufous and black band across upper breast. Two white wing bars. Head blue with white eye arcs above and below eye. Behavior of this bird: Bird did not interact with other birds and no singing was heard.
List similar species and tell how you eliminated them: Only similar species is Tropical Parula. TRPA is eliminated by presence of bold eye arcs and distinct, dark breastband.
What is your experience with this or similar species?: Northern Parula was a common migrant on two trips to NJ where I observed several dozen individuals. I have no experience with Tropical Parula.
