DID YOU TAKE NOTES?: Yes, later the same day
DID YOU CONSULT FIELD GUIDE OR OTHER REFERENCES?: Yes, later the same day
WHAT GUIDE(S) OR REFERENCE(S) DID YOU CONSULT?: The Sibley Guide to Birds and Field Guide to the Birds of North America by National Geographic.

DESCRIPTION: Wood Warbler - Dendroica magnolia. This bird has a gray head and plain greenish back. narrow white wing-bars. Not photograhed well do to angles this bird also had a pale gray neckband and complete eye-ring. Undertail coverts were bright white and the underside of the tail appeared with dark tip photo provided.
BEHAVIOR: This bird continually moved from branch to branch gleening insects as it moved along. I did not hear it vocalize and only brielfy saw it fly as it moved up or down from branch to branch. This bird did not interact with any other birds in this area that I could see.

HOW AND WHEN DID YOU POSITIVELY IDENTIFY THE BIRD, AND WHAT CLINCHED THE IDENTIFICATION FOR YOU? Since this was a new bird for me after reviewing my notes and looking at my photos I was able to determine that the bird was a juvenile or 1st winter Magnolia Warbler. The white wing-bars, pale gray neckband, gray head, white eye-ring, dark tipped tail and white undertail coverts made it easy to eliminate the other warblers to determine the correct identification of this bird.
HOW DID YOU ELIMINATE SIMILAR SPECIES, AND WHAT WERE THEY? I saw no similar species in the wood warbler family that matched this bird except the 1st winter Magnolia Warbler.

EXPERIENCE WITH THIS SPECIES (AND SIMILAR SPECIES): This is my first observation of this species.Since this is not a common bird in north Idaho I was only familiar with our local nesting birds and usual migrants wood warbler species.
GENERAL BIRDING EXPERIENCE: Godo knowledge of local birds and have been birding for over ten years leading field trips for Palouse Audubon and Canyon birders for the past 8 years. I think I am an excellent birder for local birds in this area.

WERE PHOTO(S), VIDEO, AND/OR AUDIO OBTAINED BY YOU?: Photo
