Debbie and I saw this bird on 15 December 2002, early afternoon. We were parked on the US 95 pullout opposite Potlatch in Lewiston, and the bird was resting with about 50 other gulls on the gravel bar on the far (Potlatch side) of the Clearwater River. Using my Bushnell scope (20X), I started working my way down the row of gulls, looking for the odd ball. They were mostly Ring-billed with a smattering of Californias. About two-thirds of the way down the bar, I came upon a California-sized gull that was facing away from me. It looked mostly like a CAGU with yellow legs, but with a noticeably darker back than any of the previous birds. My first thought was LBBG (remembering the Boise bird from a couple of years earlier), but since my lovely bride was standing there, I asked her to look through the scope and see if she noticed anything "odd." She looked through the scope and said, "You mean the black-backed gull? What's it called?" When I got back on the scope, I had to wait until 10 or so minutes for the bird to once again give me enough of a profile to see the bill again. I noted an orange gonydeal spot. The mantle, scaps, and coverts were nearly as dark as the primaries, whereas on the CAGUs nearby the mantle, scaps, and coverts were greyer and lighter than the black primaries. From this, I called it an adult Lesser Black-backed Gull.
