Subject: Least Flycatcher #30-B-06 & #29-B-06
All-
Shirley suggested I comment on my Least Flycatcher reports that are going into the third round. I did not spend a lot of time on these reports because I was turning in so many LEFL records (to encourage the committee to drop LEFL from review; LEFL have become relatively common in North Idaho).
Every LEFL I have identified has been from hearing the distinctive song, which I have not noted any variations of. The song I have heard is composed of identical-sounding two-syllable phrases, sung rapidly multiple times, faster than once per second. The song is harsh, hurried and repetitive. The fast repeat is diagnostic. I have never identified a LEFL from a single phrase.
Here are my descriptions from other reports, which would be appropriate for any report I turned in: Description: Repetitive jzi-bit jzi-bit jzi-bit "song", with up to 6 or so fast phrases at a time.
Description: Fast, repetitive jzi-bek jzi-bek jzi-bek "song".
How and when did you positively identify the bird, and what clinched the identification for you? The call or song is distinctive, a repeated chi-bik, chi-bik, chi-bik, and so on...
Hope that is of use. I certainly have a better appreciation of rare bird reports from the other side now...
