Location: UI Plant Science Farm (Parker Farm), eastern edge of Moscow, Latah Co.

Habitat: demonstration planting area

 

Conditions: About 15 minutes on 12/15 and 30 minutes on 12/16. Both times in the afternoon between 2 & 3 PM. Viewing conditions were good w/ overcast skies & light winds. On 12/15 viewed at close range (~ 20') but overhead feeding in ornamental birch tree. On 12/16 viewed feeding on the ground at very close range, 10' or less. Swarovski 8X42 SLC, also Sony HandyCam on 12/16.

Description: The description below is from my notes taken on 12/15 & 12/16 and supplemented from photos and video. I initially suspected Hoary Redpoll on 12/15 but was not convinced until returning on 12/16 and obtaining better views and close range video. It was with a group of ~10 Common Redpolls on 12/15 and ~30 C. Redpolls on 12/16.  The subject bird was slightly larger and with more contrast ("frostier") on back than the others, had white underparts with whispy streaks on flanks which were heaviest on sides of breast.
