Good written description and excellent photos confirm the identification of Gyrfalcon

Very nice photos of gray morph "in-hand" show diagnostic facial pattern, underwing pattern. Interesting that the excellent photos show only a very faint banding on the tail, much less than suggested by the field guides.

Bird in hand and photos plus a very complete description and elimination of similar hawks and falcons is convincing

An awesome report with clear, definitive images of the bird. What more could one ask for? I'm convinced!

Very cool bird – how exciting that must have been. The only problem I had with the report is that no mention was made of potential origin (ie; no jesses or leg scarring – I assume the band is theirs) as this species is commonly used by falconers. If there was anything abnormal with this bird, however, I’m sure it would have been mentioned.
