LOCALITY OF OBSERVATION: GLIB observed from the dike road in the SE corner of Mud Lake WMA

HABITAT: muddy area near shallow water

CONDITIONS: 5 minutes Warm, no wind, early afternoon sun Btw 1-1/2 to 2 tennis courts lengths from the bird Swarovski Spotting Scope and binoculars

DID YOU CONSULT FIELD GUIDE OR OTHER REFERENCES?: No, not at all

WHAT GUIDE(S) OR REFERENCE(S) DID YOU CONSULT?: Was birding with Paul E. Lehman; we recently found one in Arizona in the Parker valley near the Colorado River

DESCRIPTION: Threskiomithidae

BEHAVIOR: Feeding, then eventually flew. Was side by side with 3 White-faced Ibises

HOW AND WHEN DID YOU POSITIVELY IDENTIFY THE BIRD, AND WHAT CLINCHED THE IDENTIFICATION FOR YOU? -Dark eyes -Blue edge to facial skin that didn't wrap around eye -Dark facial skin -Dark legs

HOW DID YOU ELIMINATE SIMILAR SPECIES, AND WHAT WERE THEY? Eliminated White-faced Ibis which has: -Red eyes -White border wrapping behind the eye -Red facial skin -Reddish legs

EXPERIENCE WITH THIS SPECIES (AND SIMILAR SPECIES): First saw them in Texas in spring of 2007. Paul and I recently found one in Arizona, 27 Apr 2008.

GENERAL BIRDING EXPERIENCE: Since October 2003. Average level of expertise, but birding with an expert. :)
