2/15/2009 Written details are lacking but the photos are very helpful. Despite the observers concerns I feel the photos are of a Glaucous-winged Gull. Short primary projection, bulky body, overall color and pattern, large heavy black bill, domed head and centrally located eye on head, primaries with pale edging are all consistent with GWGU. |

I was convinced by the argument and photos that it wasn't a hybrid. |

I'm still convinced that jay got it right. |

On this first round, I'm voting not to accept because I think some discussion is needed. Jay says he is not 100% sure. Some of the photos look more like the Glacous-winged x Western but others look like pure Glaucous-winged. |

After reading reading the first round comments and studying the pictures again, I am convinced that this is a pure Glacous-winged Gull and not a hybrid. |

Photos show structure well - the heavy bill and long sloping forehead. Plumage doesn't suggest any hybridization. Though reporter noted that the overall color at first seemed darker than it should be, the photos look compatible with illustrations of pure GWGU in various field guides. |

To me, this bird's plumage looks pretty good for a pure GWGU, though its bill appears to be somewhat reddish at the base, like that of a 1st-cycle Herring Gull. I don't know whether or not this characteristic is acceptable for a 1st-cycle GWGU. |

I'm still convinced this is a first-cycle GWGU, without any obvious indications of hybridization. |

03-02-2009. Good description accompanying what I believe to be a set of diagnostic photos. |

In looking again, still convinced the identification was correct – actually a fairly classic example of a 1st year Glaucous-winged (Larus glaucescens). |
