REPORTER EMAIL: clgtlg@moscow.com
OTHER OBSERVERS: Christine Gray my wife
DATE REPORT PREPARED: July 13, 2007
DATE SIGHTING OCCURRED: July 2, 2007 and July 7, 2007
LOCALITY OF OBSERVATION: Approximately 3 miles south of Moscow, Idaho. Birds observed at Valhalla Hills Mobile Home Park along Clyde Road.
HABITAT: Residentail trailer court
CONDITIONS: Observed the bird for approxmiately 1/2 hour the first time I saw them. Warm clear summer day.
DID YOU TAKE NOTES?: No, not at all
DID YOU CONSULT FIELD GUIDE OR OTHER REFERENCES?: Yes, during the observation
WHAT GUIDE(S) OR REFERENCE(S) DID YOU CONSULT?: The Sibley Field Guide to Birds of Western North America. DESCRIPTION: Doves. The two birds I observed were lighter in color than a Mourning Dove and had a very large white band on the tip of their tails. Also observed a dark neck-ring on the back of the neck. The birds also had a black outer web on tail and gray undertail coverts. Birds also had dark primaries.
BEHAVIOR: Birds were first seen gathering grit along a gravel road and flew up on a power line or telephone line when I drove down the road. There was a couple of Mourning Doves in the area and they did not mix or get very close to one another. Did not hear the birds call or sing.
HOW AND WHEN DID YOU POSITIVELY IDENTIFY THE BIRD, AND WHAT CLINCHED THE IDENTIFICATION FOR YOU? Due to the large white tipped tail and dark neck-ring and black outer web and dark primaries. Could not find any other dove species that looked like that in Sibley's guide.
HOW DID YOU ELIMINATE SIMILAR SPECIES, AND WHAT WERE THEY? The only other species similar is the Ringed Turtle-Dove and these birds were darker and had the distinct black outer web and dark primaries that the turtle-dove does not have.
EXPERIENCE WITH THIS SPECIES (AND SIMILAR SPECIES): This was a life bird for me.
GENERAL BIRDING EXPERIENCE: Been an active birder for 7 to 8 years.
WERE PHOTO(S), VIDEO, AND/OR AUDIO OBTAINED BY YOU?: Photos below
