WHAT GUIDE(S) OR REFERENCE(S) DID YOU CONSULT?:
DESCRIPTION:
Pale colored dove with contrasting dark gray primaries and black partial collar on nape. No white visible on wings.
BEHAVIOR:
Perched on power pole. I saw this individual from my car and noticed the contrasting primaries so I stopped. Black band on nape seen after getting out of car. Duratioin of observation less than one minute total.
HOW AND WHEN DID YOU POSITIVELY IDENTIFY THE BIRD, AND WHAT CLINCHED THE IDENTIFICATION FOR YOU?
The black partial collar was the clincher.
HOW DID YOU ELIMINATE SIMILAR SPECIES, AND WHAT WERE THEY?
Mourning Dove does not have the partial collar and the primaries are paler, especially in comparison to the wing coverts. No other dove has the partial collar except Ringed Turtle-Dove which has paler primaries that do not contrast with wing coverts.
EXPERIENCE WITH THIS SPECIES (AND SIMILAR SPECIES):
I've seen dozens of Eurasian Collared Doves over the past few years and feel very familiar with them. I see hundreds of Mourning Doves annually.
GENERAL BIRDING EXPERIENCE:
13 years
