What guide(s) or reference(s) did you consult? Sibley, National Geographic

Description: Pale-colored Dove with square tail and collar. White edges on tail feathers. Black primary tips.

Behavior: sometimes skittish, won’t allow close approach, will otherwise feed on feeders.

How and when did you positively identify the bird, and what clinched the identification for you?

Pete reported to Dave during winter 2005 that they’d been watching some different-looking doves at their feeders and described them. (They are familiar with Mourning Doves.) He said he’d seen 5 at a time, and thought they were 3 young and 2 adults. They sounded like Eurasians so we went over to check them out. On 3/18/06 Dave found and confirmed seeing a bird in that area. I returned with Dave on 3/19 and we watched as 2 Eurasian Collared-Doves flew over and around us and landed in a spruce tree in a neighboring yard.

Please see below for excerpts from my NAB reports about these and other sightings.

What clinched the ID for me was seeing the features specific to this species:  Pale-colored Dove with square tail and collar.  White edges on tail feathers. Black primary tips. In addition, Dave heard them call.

How did you eliminate similar species, and what were they? Square tail, color and collar  distinguishes it from Mourning Doves.

Experience with this species (and similar species): We have been seeing this species elsewhere in Idaho since 2001 and had brushed up on  the key features then in order to know one when we saw it. We had first seen it in India in 1987 and again in Ventura, CA in 1999.

General birding experience: Excellent

Were photo(s), video, and/or audio obtained by you? (If yes, please include or attach) Yes, photos  were obtained by Deb Peters, and I have one that is not as good, but which shows the bird. See attached. (Please advise if you would like the other 2 shots.)
