Written description and photos confirm the identification of Eurasian Collared-Dove. |
12/14/2008 Outer web of outer rectrice is dark so I'm not bothered by the dark edges of the tail visible in the photo. The dark tail tip appears paler than the edges of the outer rects which makes it the under side of the central rects, which are longer than the outer rects. Other field marks visible are consistent with EC Dove so I have no reservations about accepting this record. |

Photographs are diagnostic 1st picture - Under tail: dark outer web and gry coverts can be seen other pictures show the dark primaries |
12-16-2008. I'm staying with my first vote for the same reason. |

I'm not sure what to make of the combination of features on the individuals in the photos. All the birds seem to possess the dark primaries diagnostic of EUCD, and blunt, square-tipped tails. One bird lacks a "collar" and is presumably a juvenile. But the individual in the first photo shows a white underside of the tail bordered on all sides by black. The black terminal border might be a photographic artifact, or else suggests hybridization. This is the only tail underside in any of the photos. In summary, these birds most closely resemble EUCD, but I would prefer to see some clearer photos. |
