The bird is easily identified by the red shield and red bill with a yellow tip. The observer reported these key field marks.

It would have been nice if the observer had been able to see the white flanks. However, other characteristics diagnostic.

I know Bob to be a careful observer and his report is convincing. I'm familiar with the area and have looked at many hundreds, if not thousands, of Coots as they flushed out of the canal, over the dike, and into the main marshes trying to find a Common Moorhen among them. The lighting is usually good there and I am sure you could easily see the bill color even while driving by. In addition the timing of the observation seems appropriate.

Although I wish Bob had seen the bird's white flank stripes and tail area, I've noted that these features are not always obvious on swimming or resting moorhens I've seen in the past. His description of the bill is fairly convincing and provides adequate justification for my vote of acceptance.

Even if briefly seen, the description was quite adequate.

Good description of distinctive species.

I am a bit hesitant to accept this record because the view is so brief. I considered whether a trick of lighting might make a coot appear to have a red bill, but decided that was improbable under the lighting conditions described by the reporter.
