Date and time of record: Approximately 12:30 pm on 10 2/2002   Date report prepared: 11/11/2002

Locality:  Along the Henry’s Fork of the Snake River near St. Anthony at approximately 44.03504 north, 111.56496 west.

Habitat: Riparian

Conditions (e.g. weather, prior weather, light conditions, distance, optical aids, duration, etc.): Cloudy but bright and cold, temp near 50 degrees.  I used Nikon Mountaineer 10 x 25 binocs at distances from 30 yards to less than ten yards.

Description of bird(s) (size, color, all field marks you observed, field marks not seen, etc.): First fall female.  Back bright green with no visible dark streaks.  No chestnut on flanks.  Underparts white.  Face gray with bold whitish eye ring. Two yellow wings bars.  Bill pale and large.

Behavior of this bird(s) (song or calls, other birds with this one, interactions, etc.): Did not call or sing.  Foraged low in woody shrubs and seemed to prefer Hawthornes.  Did not interact with any other birds.

List similar species and tell how you eliminated them:  There don’t seem to be any similar species but Peterson’s Warblers states “Fall females could be mistaken for Bay-breasted and Blackpoll Warblers,…”  Both species would be eliminated by bold eye ring and yellow wing bars.

What is your experience with this or similar species?:  My experience with CSWA is limited to several individuals on three different trips to NJ and one individual in Idaho.
