LOCALITY OF OBSERVATION: Genesee sewage pond sw of Genesee, Idaho. In Nez Perce County Idaho at county line with Latah County.
HABITAT: water
CONDITIONS: warm clear spring day. Spotting scope, field glasses and digital camera. Sun was behind me
DID YOU TAKE NOTES?: No, not at all
DID YOU CONSULT FIELD GUIDE OR OTHER REFERENCES?: Yes, during the observation
WHAT GUIDE(S) OR REFERENCE(S) DID YOU CONSULT?: The Sibley Field Guide to Birds and National Geographic Field GUide to the Birds fo North America
DESCRIPTION: Geese, Swans and Ducks
BEHAVIOR: There were 4 geese at the pond that morning. 2 large Canada Geese and 1 very small goose and another goose not quite as small as the smallest one. These are all in the photo I will submit.
HOW AND WHEN DID YOU POSITIVELY IDENTIFY THE BIRD, AND WHAT CLINCHED THE IDENTIFICATION FOR YOU?
After observing these birds with the scope I saw that the smallest goose with a short neck with a very small round head and very short bill with a dark breast. Never saw the purplish color of the B.c. minima but light was not right and the bird was to far away.
HOW DID YOU ELIMINATE SIMILAR SPECIES, AND WHAT WERE THEY?
The bird in question was just to small and the short bill and small size with the very dark breast made it obvious to me that it was not a Canada Goose.
EXPERIENCE WITH THIS SPECIES (AND SIMILAR SPECIES): This is only the second time I had seen this small species of goose.
GENERAL BIRDING EXPERIENCE: I have been an avid birder for the past 4 to 5 years and lead field trip s for palouse audubon and canyon birders.
