I still find the report credible. The key field notes and song are described well. |

I'm sticking to my guns - we need more info to separate this bird from a Cassin's. |

6 April 2010 This is an intriguing report by a very experienced birder. However I feel there is insufficient detail in the description to eliminate a bright Cassin’s Vireo, which can have fairly extensive yellow flanks and bright white “spectacles” that contrast boldy with the head. While this may have been a Blue-headed I’m hesitant to accept it without diagnostic field marks that include details of nape/mantle contrast, white edges of rectrices, and a description of the sharply demarcated gray/white on the throat. |

This was a difficult decision for me. On the one hand, I know the observer to be a good and careful birder. But on the other hand, I needed more description of this bird's plumage to convince me that it wasn't a bright fall CAVI that was mistaken for a BHVI. |

convincing description by experienced observer |

The description sounds good to me. I see a lot of Cassin's (in field & in-hand) every fall and even the rare bright, adult males are never as contrasty as Blue-headed. The song (not sure why they sing is fall but I hear Cassin's doing it every September) sounds convincing too |

27 April 2010
I was convinced by the description of yellow sides and the song quality. |
23 May 2010
I find the description of the unexpected song convincing. |

The combination of bright yellow flanks, contrasting blue head with a white throat, and the description of the song support Blue-headed Vireo. |

After re-reading the report and voters comments I still feel the observer separated this bird from the other solitary vireos sufficiently. The bright yellow sides, contrast of blue-gray head with white throat, and song description are all good. |

While it seems strange that this bird was singing during migration, a practicing young bird would fit. The description seemed quite adequate to separate the other two possibilities. |

I agree with Dave and Cliff - we need more detail to separate BHVI from CAVI. |
