Sibley's Guide to Birds, Sibley, 2000

DESCRIPTION:

Female hummingbird (white tail) Red throat patch, white spot over the eye, no ru fous color on sides and no white band on throat area

BEHAVIOR:

It arrive Sept. 14, 2006 chased the Black-chinned hummingbird away from the feeders and has been here every day. It usually arrives around 10:00 AM and uses one of the feeders at intervals until dusk. There might be more than one as at times we slightly different markings on the bird One feeder is attached to a window and we have excellent views.

HOW AND WHEN DID YOU POSITIVELY IDENTIFY THE BIRD, AND WHAT CLINCHED THE IDENTIFICATION FOR YOU?

Betty - Red throat patch
Robert - Red throat patch, no white band on throat

HOW DID YOU ELIMINATE SIMILAR SPECIES, AND WHAT WERE THEY?

Other species seen here are the Calliope, female has no red-throat patch, Rufous female has red throat patch and rust sides and on the tail, Black-chinned female has no red throat patch, Broad-tailed female has no red throat patch, rust sides & less rust on the tail. It makes a noise as it flies.

EXPERIENCE WITH THIS SPECIES (AND SIMILAR SPECIES):

We have lived in AZ & CA and are very familiar with this species and other species of hummingbirds. We did not realized it was unusual or rare in ID

GENERAL BIRDING EXPERIENCE:

Moderate to good - birded the West Coast seriously for 10 years - done bird counts for Pahranagat NWR 3 years - bird census for a portion of Camas County last fall and doing the same this summer about every 2 weeks - bird programs for Salton Sea State Regional Area - 3 years
