DESCRIPTION:
Hummingbird, the gray chest and marked (tannish)undertail coverts are always what makes me look closer. The throat was speckled not solid; green back and head.
BEHAVIOR:
Quite often I will hear this species before I see it which is often how I confirm it. I unfortunately have not been able to tell immature male from female.
HOW AND WHEN DID YOU POSITIVELY IDENTIFY THE BIRD, AND WHAT CLINCHED THE IDENTIFICATION FOR YOU?
see above.
HOW DID YOU ELIMINATE SIMILAR SPECIES, AND WHAT WERE THEY?
The gray chest, undertail coverts and voice. It also late for any of my usual hummers.
EXPERIENCE WITH THIS SPECIES (AND SIMILAR SPECIES):
This is the 3rd year that I've had this species visit my yard. I see all the time when visiting friends in Southern California. The other 4 species that come don't match these field marks and voice.
GENERAL BIRDING EXPERIENCE:
I've been birding for 15 years and feel I do a good job of ID, I'm an artist so pay close attention to detail.
WERE PHOTO(S), VIDEO, AND/OR AUDIO OBTAINED BY YOU?: Photo
