DATE
SIGHTING OCCURRED:
1/3/07
LOCALITY OF OBSERVATION:
This bird coming to a feeder. Northeast of Lenore, Idaho on Bench Road. Idaho
DeLorme pg 58 bottom of map C 2.5. Nez Perce County.
HABITAT:
Canyon - reparian draw above house where feeder is locateed.
CONDITIONS:
This bird has been coming to Mr. Reynolds feeder since
October 29, 2006 and is a regular visitor to their hummingbird feeder. It has
been staying in a thicked just north of the house when not at the feeder. Since
it has been there since late fall into winter it has experienced many forms of
weather. It was late afternoon when I observed this bird. It was also raining
so my pictures due not do the bird justice. With a lack of sun the red throat
does not show up very well.
DID YOU TAKE NOTES?:
No, not at
all
DID YOU CONSULT FIELD GUIDE OR OTHER REFERENCES?:
Yes,
during the observation
WHAT GUIDE(S) OR REFERENCE(S) DID YOU
CONSULT?:
Sibley Field Guide to birds or North America.
DESCRIPTION:
This bird appears to be an immature. Dark red feathers
are sparce on the top of the head (See Photo), and the red on the throat is
just developing. More red does appear if the light is just right. The breast is
gray-green and the rump is very white.Bird has a heavy dark bill.
BEHAVIOR:
I did not see this bird fly nor did I hear it. It was the
only bird in their yard at the time of my observation.
HOW AND WHEN
DID YOU POSITIVELY IDENTIFY THE BIRD, AND WHAT CLINCHED THE IDENTIFICATION FOR
YOU?
I identified it almost immediately. The redish head and throat
and green back with greenish gray brest with a heavy black bill made it obvious
it was an Anna's.
HOW DID YOU ELIMINATE SIMILAR SPECIES, AND WHAT WERE
THEY?
No other known species in the area this time of year that would
survive the weather. No other species that looks quite like this bird also.
EXPERIENCE WITH THIS SPECIES (AND SIMILAR SPECIES):
This is only
the third Ann's I have observed.
GENERAL BIRDING EXPERIENCE:
Been an active birder for 5+ years and lead field trips for Palouse Audubon and
Canyon Birders on a regular basis.

OBTAINED BY YOU?:
